ROV TOUR is a tiny educational tech company with an aim to bring underwater robotics education to schools.
If young students can get direct access to learning about, and interacting with, the underwater environment, it will help them develop empathy for the ocean and underwater environments. It’s important to understand that a large portion of our planet is covered in water, and that the ocean is also where we get a lot of our food.
How to Build a DIY Underwater Robot
We bring basic knowledge on how to build a DIY underwater remote-operated vehicle, AKA, remotely operated vehicle (ROV). ROV Tour has been doing outreach. Most recently, at The Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco, we brought our DIY educational ROVs and a portable pool for an exhibition.
During time with the students, we interacted with many who were totally new to ROVs and who had lots of questions. Thank you to Ms. Caitlyn Toropova, a former marine biologist who is now a science teacher at the school, for the invitation to visit.
Sparking Questions Through Exposure
Our time there sparked new possibilities in many of the kids’ minds. They asked questions such as, ‘how do all components get waterproofed?’ and ‘how do you control everything?’ Other questions we frequently field are things such as, ‘what can ROVs do?’ and ‘how much do they cost?’ As we explain the basics of how ROVs work, many kids become much more comfortable asking more and more complex questions.
We are glad to be able to help motivate more kids to consider marine technology. We hope to visit more schools and educational organizations that are interested in introducing underwater devices and marine education to students. We think all kids should have the tools to help them learn about the underwater world.
